About SHIFT-MED

Shaping the Future of Universities: Twin Transitions across the Mediterranean (Capacity building in Higher Education: South Mediterranean)

About Shift-Med

SHIFT-MED is an Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education project that supports the modernization and transformation of higher education institutions in Tunisia and Palestine. The project focuses on helping universities lead the green and digital transitions by strengthening institutional capacity, improving sustainability governance, and integrating innovative approaches into education and campus operations.

Implementation

The implementation of SHIFT-MED follows a structured and collaborative approach, bringing together higher education institutions, vocational training providers, and research partners from Europe and the Mediterranean region.
The project is organized through interconnected work packages that support coordination, capacity building, institutional development, curriculum modernization, and campus-level pilot actions. Initial activities focus on establishing governance structures such as Sustainability Committees and conducting baseline assessments to identify institutional needs and priorities.
Following this, targeted training programmes and capacity-building activities strengthen the skills of academic and administrative staff in leadership, strategic planning, sustainability management, and digital transformation. The project also supports the development of institutional strategies, action plans, and modernized curricula that integrate sustainability and digital transformation.
Pilot actions are then implemented at campus level to test innovative solutions in areas such as resource efficiency, environmental management, and digital learning. Continuous monitoring and quality assurance ensure that progress is tracked and that project outcomes remain scalable, transferable, and sustainable beyond the project duration.

Expected Impact

Through strong partnership collaboration and knowledge exchange, SHIFT-MED contributes to long-term institutional transformation across the Mediterranean region. The project supports universities in becoming more sustainable, digitally advanced, inclusive, and resilient institutions capable of responding to environmental, educational, and socio-economic challenges.
