SHIFT-MED Engages Students at the University of Kairouan to Build a Greener and More Sustainable Campus

Introducing SHIFT-MED to the Student Community at ISIGK
On 13 October 2026, the SHIFT-MED project team participated in the Student Integration Day at the Higher Institute of Management and Computer Science of Kairouan (ISIGK), University of Kairouan, organising an awareness-raising activity dedicated to sustainability and the green transition. The event provided an opportunity to introduce the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Higher Education project, its objectives, international partnership and Work Packages to students. Through direct interaction and project information materials, the team highlighted how SHIFT-MED supports institutional transformation and encourages the university community to contribute to a greener, more environmentally responsible campus.

Empowering Students to Become Active Contributors to Sustainability
A central focus of the activity was encouraging students to move beyond environmental awareness and participate in practical sustainability initiatives. Throughout the event, SHIFT-MED representatives engaged with students, exchanged ideas and presented opportunities for involvement in green mini-projects, sustainable mobility activities and environmental awareness campaigns. Students expressed their interest in contributing to these initiatives, demonstrating the importance of student engagement in translating institutional sustainability strategies into everyday campus practices. The activity also strengthened communication between the project team and the student community, reinforcing the principle that meaningful green transformation requires active participation at every institutional level.

Five Strategic Pillars for a Greener and More Sustainable Campus
The awareness-raising initiative introduced five interconnected pillars guiding student participation in campus sustainability: Sustainable Mobility; Environmental Awareness and Eco-Friendly Practices; Teaching and Student Projects; Student Clubs and Sustainability Initiatives; and Green Spaces and Tree Planting. Together, these priorities provide a practical framework for encouraging environmentally responsible behaviour, supporting student-led initiatives and integrating sustainability into academic and extracurricular activities. By mobilising students around these shared priorities, the University of Kairouan is taking an important step towards translating SHIFT-MED’s green transition objectives into tangible local actions and fostering a more sustainable campus culture.
