SHIFT-MED Advances Green Curriculum Development through Academic Consultations at ISSAT Kairouan

Sustainability Committee and Academic Departments Join Forces for Greener Education

As part of the Erasmus+ SHIFT-MED – Shaping the Future of Universities: Twin Transitions across the Mediterranean project, the Higher Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology of Kairouan (ISSAT Kairouan), University of Kairouan, organised consultation meetings bringing together members of its Sustainability Committee and representatives of relevant academic departments. The meetings contributed to identifying institutional academic priorities for integrating environmental sustainability into higher education programmes. Through this collaborative approach, ISSAT Kairouan is taking practical steps towards aligning its academic development with the project’s objectives for greener and more sustainable universities.

Identifying Opportunities for New Green Courses and Curriculum Modernisation

A central focus of the consultations was exploring opportunities to introduce new sustainability-oriented courses and update existing curricula to better reflect the challenges of the ecological transition. Discussions aimed to identify relevant academic priorities, potential areas for curriculum improvement and opportunities to strengthen students’ environmental knowledge and green skills. By involving academic representatives directly in the consultation process, ISSAT Kairouan is helping ensure that future curriculum development responds to institutional needs while supporting the broader green transition objectives of SHIFT-MED.

Strengthening Institutional Cooperation for Sustainable Academic Transformation

The meetings represent an important contribution to SHIFT-MED’s ongoing work on academic priorities for green curricula, connecting Sustainability Committees with the academic departments responsible for teaching and curriculum development. This cooperation provides a foundation for translating institutional sustainability commitments into educational improvements and preparing students to address emerging environmental challenges. The consultation outcomes will inform subsequent curriculum development activities and support the project’s wider ambition of fostering sustainable, innovative and future-oriented higher education institutions across the Mediterranean.
